The village of Chimayo, 28 miles north of Santa Fe, is home to the famed Santuario de Chimayo, believed by many to house soil with miraculous healing powers. (The Santuario is visited by thousands of pilgrims a year, especially on Good Friday.) The community is also home to several artists who create vibrant weavings, stamped tin ornaments, carvings, among other art. Many of these artists carry on creative traditions started by their families generations in the past.
Chimayo is also known for its distinctive northern New Mexican cuisine and rare heirloom red chile. The family-owned Rancho de Chimayo is known for its renowned blue corn enchiladas, hand rolled tamales and stuffed sopaipillas. In 2016, it won a James Beard Foundation America’s Classics Award.
Taos has long been known as an artist community boasting Georgia O’Keeffe, Mabel Dodge Luhan and Ansel Adams among some of its famed residents. Art and artists continue to flourish in and around the town. Just outside Taos is Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States.
The drives between Santa Fe and Taos – along the High Road (Route 285) through high desert, forest and mountain countryside, or along the Low Road (State Route 68), which hugs the Rio Grande and passes numerous wineries – are frequently named one of Travel + Leisure’s best drives (see: America’s Best Winter Drives, America’s Most Scenic Roads and America’s Best Spring Drives).
El Monte Sagrado Living Resort and Spa’s De La Tierra restaurant showcases local, seasonal flavors for a unique dining experience every time.
